It Was All True

(By Barbara Ayton)
The softness of the evening falls
Upon the light of day
A tenderness pervades the air
As twilight fades away
The stars upon their velvet cloak
Awake to light the night
While shepherds keep a watchful eye
O’er fields of dotted white
Then suddenly before them stands
An angel, bathed in light,
Who tells them of a baby born
This long-awaited night
As fear dispels and wonder grows
The sky breaks into song
As though the heavens cannot contain
The praises of the throng
Alone once more, beneath the stars
They gaze into the night
Then words and thoughts come tumbling forth
As they recount the sight
While they make haste to seek Him out
They wonder, “Is this real?”
“Have we just heard God’s angel speak
His plan to us reveal?”
‘Til…nestled ‘midst the scented hay
upon a manger bed
they catch a glimpse of swaddling clothes
and downy baby head
Their eyes awash with unshed tears
they fall upon their knees
It was all true, this is the One
our Saviour, Prince of Peace
