Praying Friends,

How do you handle those who despise the name of Jesus and actively seek to destroy the work of God?

The enemy has not changed since the beginning, and the author of Psalm 119 gives solid advice in dealing with those who are instruments in his hand.

This is the Hebrew letter, Samekh, Psalm 119:113-120 (NIV):

I hate double-minded people, but I love your law. You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word. Away from me, you evildoers, that I may keep the commands of my God! Sustain me, my God, according to your promise, and I will live; do not let my hopes be dashed. Uphold me, and I will be delivered; I will always have regard for your decrees. You reject all who stray from your decrees, for their delusions come to nothing. All the wicked of the earth you discard like dross; therefore I love your statutes. My flesh trembles in fear of you; I stand in awe of your laws.

Right at the outset of this section, the strong emotions of the psalmist are evoked as he considers these adversaries in his life. He is a man of faith who loves what God loves and hates what God hates.

Those opposed to God and His purposes are described in these eight verses as double-minded, evildoers, those who stray, and wicked. Their intention is clearly not the glory of God. While the psalmist expresses his hatred towards evil, in the same breath, he voices his love for God’s word.

Next, the psalmist conveys his understanding that his protection, his hope, and his sustenance are from God alone.

Whether it is God’s word, promises, or decrees, he receives from the LORD and is therefore able to continue on despite the opposition. God is a safe shelter where true refuge is found. His faithful promises provide strength and hope and therefore sustain the soul.

The psalmist has a clear awareness that God has his back and will be victorious in the end. Verses 118 and 119 state that the end of those who reject God will fail and that God will prevail.

The wonder and greatness of God caused the author to tremble in reverent awe! The experience doesn’t create comfort, or sentimentality, but worshipful fear.

As we pray today for prodigals and for revival among us, may our love for God’s Word be strengthened and our admiration of God’s character be deepened.

Warmly in Christ,

Bryan and Rachel
