Strength For the WearySoul

Dear Praying Friends,
Are you feeling the weight of life upon your soul? The author of Psalm 119 was extremely low and his heart was filled with heaviness. We are not told the length or depth of His sorrow, but thankfully, he didn’t remain there.
Notice the language of the psalmist as he writes the fourth stanza of Psalm 119:25-32 NIV, which corresponds to the fourth letter of the Hebrew alphabet, Daleth:
I am laid low in the dust; preserve my life according to your word. I gave an account of my ways and you answered me; teach me your decrees. Cause me to understand the way of your precepts, that I may meditate on your wonderful deeds. My soul is weary with sorrow; strengthen me according to your word. Keep me from deceitful ways; be gracious to me and teach me your law. I have chosen the way of faithfulness; I have set my heart on your laws. I hold fast to your statutes, LORD; do not let me be put to shame. I run in the path of your commands, for you have broadened my understanding.
Verse 25 has been translated various ways:
“I am laid low in the dust”
“My soul clings to the dust”
“My life is down in the dust”
“I lie in the dust.”
Verse 28’s translations are the language of someone who is literally at the very bottom:
“My soul is weary with sorrow”
“I weep with sorrow”
“I am weary from grief”
“My soul melts from heaviness”
“My sad life is dilapidated”
The weariness of your life may come from an illness, disease, or medical condition. It may be caused by unsaved relatives, a wayward child, life partner, or parent. It could be the loss of a job or the inability to get one. It may be grief from someone you knew closely taken from you in death.
It could be the overwhelming responsibilities of life’s circumstances. It might be a failure that keeps recurring and dragging you down. There could be any number of possibilities that are bringing you down to the dust.
We need to express how we feel. That needs to be brought to the open ears of our heavenly Father. It is also necessary to share with those you love and trust. Those who care enough to sit with you, hold your hand if necessary, hear the aches of your heart, and provide needed comfort. This is the meaning of true faithfulness.
But how does the psalmist rise from the dust? How does he gain healing for his weary soul?
Throughout this section, he positions his heart toward God and His Word. He used expressions like, “preserve my life according to your word…teach me your decrees…strengthen me according to your word…be gracious to me and teach me your law.” These are the pleas of a person who recognizes that he needs help and understands that there are resources in the Scriptures to carry him through difficult seasons of life.
He then states his resolve not to give up, “I have chosen the way of faithfulness…I have set my heart on your laws…I hold fast to your statutes…I run in the path of your commands.”
This is the language of true faith. To run in the path of God’s commands is essentially to run toward God Himself. Like an athlete completely focused on the finish line, we run towards our Savior, our Jesus, our friend, with all our being.
As we pray for prodigals and for revival, may our hearts be filled and focused on our God.
Warmly in Christ,
Bryan and Rachel
