Praying Friends,

What is your favorite sandwich? Chicken salad? Egg salad? Roast Beef and lettuce or maybe a yummy BLT? What is inside a sandwich matters, but so does the bread that holds it together.

Psalm 8 is a psalm of praise, and it is structured like a delicious sandwich. Notice how the psalm opens and closes with the same line of adoration, with his reason for praise sandwiched in between (Psalm 8:1-9 NIV):

For the director of music. According to Gittith. A psalm of David. LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens. Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger. When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? You have made hem a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor. You made them rulers over the works of your hands; you put everything under their feet: all flocks and herds, and the animals of the wild, the birds in the sky, and the fish in the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas. LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

The frame of the psalm that holds it together is significant. He opens and closes with, “LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens.”

He uses two names for God. First, “LORD,” which is Yahweh, God’s covenantal name, and “Lord,” which is Adonai, emphasizing God’s authority and power over all things. How wonderful that the God who made and holds the cosmos together is our God, the same One who always keeps His promises?

In Scripture, God’s name is His revealed character and reputation. His majesty isn’t only displayed in the skies; it is “in all the earth,” meaning it’s visible for us to see every day in ordinary places.

One of those ordinary places is found in verse 2, “Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold against your enemies.” When you look at a baby in all their beauty, innocence, and uniqueness, you see the majesty of God.

David then beholds the heavens, the moon and stars that set in their proper places, and His heart is overwhelmed. The work of God’s fingers, which is so breathtaking and magnificent, causes him to feel his smallness. In verse 4, he asks, “What is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?”

The same God who made and runs the universe, who always keeps His promises, is the God who cares about us. Whatever your situation is today, whatever condition your heart may be in, God knows about it, and He cares about you. “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7).

The psalm goes on to tell us how God has crowned humanity with glory and honor.

The majesty of God doesn’t shrink us; it frames our dignity.

We look at the greatness of God and sense our smallness, but then we consider the glory conferred upon us by being made in His image, and we live with purpose.

As we pray today for our prodigals and for revival among us, may we do so with hearts overflowing with worship to the majestic name of our God!

Warmly in Christ,

Bryan and Rachel
