Choosing an Attribute of God for the Year

The waterfall reflects the grandeur of our God and His attributes.

Have you heard about choosing an attribute of God to focus on for the year?

I had heard about picking a word to focus on for the year, like contentment or joy or truth, but I had never thought about choosing an attribute of God until I read these words in a post:

“Maybe you struggle with anxiety and you are thinking about having your word of the year be rest or peace to try to help with that anxiety. What if you focused on God’s sovereignty this year. Sovereignty is God’s ruling over and in complete control of EVERYTHING. So then in every situation that happens this year you are intentionally thinking about searching for God’s sovereignty in those situations. Wouldn’t that actually just naturally put your heart at rest in peace while also drawing you closer to the Lord?”

She also said: “If you have an attribute of God that you’re focused on this year, either along with or instead of a word of the year, then you will have the solution for your problem this year.”

When we look for God’s attributes in our daily lives, we will be drawn closer to him and will have peace in our hearts.

My word for this year is “truth” because I have come to realize the negative self-talk going on in my mind. I have sometimes believed a lie about myself or a situation and not understood God’s character. At times the lie can look so much like the truth. Satan is a master at half-truths!

The wrong thoughts I have had have led to misunderstandings of God’s true character.

When considering the attributes of God, I kept going to God’s faithfulness. His truth is forever, He never changes, He is a promise-keeper, He is faithful. God is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and He is trustworthy.

God wants me grounded in His truth, and this year I want to seek His truth in each situation and rest in His faithfulness.

“Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise” (Hebrews 10:23).

Here are a few of God’s attributes:

  • Sovereign

  • Intimate

  • Good

  • Merciful

  • Faithful-steadfast

  • Love

  • Holy

  • Gentle

  • Righteous

  • Gracious

  • Compassionate

  • Worthy

  • Omnipotent (all powerful)

  • Omnibenevolent (supremely good)

  • Immutable (never changes)

What attribute will you choose to focus on this year?
