Our Fountain

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Rachel and I appreciate your support as we devote each Wednesday to prayer for revival and our prodigals. Thank you for receiving this reminder each week along with the short devotional.

My reading lately has been in the book of Zechariah and while the words are directed to God’s earthly people, Israel, they came to me with fresh impact and power today. He says, “On that day there shall be a fountain opened for the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and uncleanness” (Zech. 13:1). For the nation of Israel in their weakness and distress, this must have been a welcome prophecy of hope and assurance. It pointed to the Saviour and specifically to the cross where the fountain was opened. Sadly as a nation, they will not come into the full benefits of this fountain until the second advent of the Messiah. However, any individuals who are willing to turn to the Saviour can have their sins washed away in His cleansing blood. William Cowper wrote these beautiful words:

There is a fountain filled with blood,

Drawn from Immanuel’s veins;

And sinners, plunged beneath that flood,

Lose all their guilty stains.

According to Brown-Driver-Briggs, this fountain in Zechariah 13:1 is a spring, figurative of life, joy, and purification. The wonder of the cross and of the living Christ, is that we get to enjoy the fullness and blessing of this fountain every waking hour of our lives. We were cleansed from our sins by His atoning blood and were given the Holy Spirit within us as a fountain of living water springing up into eternal life. As we draw from Him, our deepest needs are met and our God is glorified. Amazingly, the fountain’s abundant supply will never run dry. Throughout our lives and into eternity itself, He is and will be our source of fullness. As we pray today, may His fountain richly supply all our needs.

With love in Christ,

Bryan and Rachel
